POETRY BY PHILLIP BROWN

The Presence

I’ve fought for the causes
And I’ve laid with death
In the shadow of no reason
But always around me
Was the presence of the Galilean

I’ve worked on pictures of reality
And I know what it is to fail
I’ve given up a fight for a dream
But always there to rescue me
Was the presence of the Nazarene

But when I need a friend
Someone to bring the best out of me
Someone I can trust to the very end
Someone who knows the inside of me
I’ve always got Jesus
Yes, I’ve always got Jesus
Jesus is my closest friend

I’ve given to the day
And staked my future on a job
Worked hard since I can remember
But when I feel so worthless
I feel the presence of the Carpenter

I’ve fallen on my knees
When God’s Spirit called me
On my feet there’s none braver
But when I’m in sin and weak
I depend on the Presence of the Savior

But when I need a friend
Someone to bring the best out of me
Someone I can trust to the very end
Someone who knows the inside of me
I’ve always got Jesus
Yes, I’ve always got Jesus
Jesus is my closest friend

Make Your Bad Stuff Look Good

Sittin’ home alone one night
Decided I should get me a mate
I got myself on the internet and with great trepidation
I joined myself a dating site

Times New Roman font
Put it down right:
Tall dark handsome Casanova
Lots of money, new corvette
Non-materialistic black belt seeks serious relationship

Oh, I almost forgot
PTSD
Organic food
Favorite quote
Francis of Assisi
Better to understand then be understood
My best friend said
Try to make your bad stuff look good

Let’s see, kind of goes like this
I’m alcoholic but sober one day at a time
Combat veteran proud of it had to fight for my country
I found out war’ a state of mind

Opposite sex, said to be different
They’re relational want someone right for them
I thought about what I’d say, case I met one in person
Darlin’, VA benefits ain’t a problem?

Thought about my life
How someone like me could be understood
Standin’ outside Tony’s coffee shop
My best friend said
Try to make your bad stuff look good

Your Heart Says You Have To Pay

No sense in hangin’ around
I’ve got a new life to catch in the mornin’
I wish I could stay much longer
But I’ve got a lot of feelins to pack
And it may be a long time until I get back

And if you ever have to get a hold of me
I’ll only be about two or three feelings away
Be sure to keep some pain on hand
Just in case your heart says, you have to pay

The hard times arrive early
I have to catch those memories while they linger
Say good bye to the good times for me
This time tomorrow I’ll be deep in regret
Crossin’ all that heartache I have to feel yet

And if you ever have to get a hold of me
I’ll only be about two or three feelings away
Be sure to keep some pain on hand
Just in case your heart says, you have to pay

Wounded Healer

Wounded healer
Tell me where you have come from
Are you from Calvary?
See the wounds on your body
One of them is for me
Hardly what I’d call savory

Wounded healer
I believe the creation story
Adam the first person
Fallen nature not evolution
Crucified Raised
My claim to heaven is certain

Wounded healer
Oh how I struggled
Through the night
As I tried to write
But nothing came out right

Then on the radio I heard
Joni’s program for my answer
Little girl, Cerebral Palsy, sung Amazing Grace
Electric voice box
Everybody cried a lot

Wounded healer
This is the song I got
Gospel sincerity
Wounded healer
Word of God had no disparity?

Wounded healer
In your eyes I am perfect
You look down from heaven
Him, you see
Nailed to wood instead of me

Wounded healer
Satan is the god of this world
Performance decides the truth
Appearances are everything
It’s who is who
Wounded healer not so with you

Broken

Body’s broken
Pain’ red hot
Can’t go on
God’s grace I’ve got

Body’s broken
See no way
Sovereignty
God’s Word I stay

When I’m weak I’m strong
When I’m right I’m wrong
Sufficient dependent
God’s grace transcendent

Weep with those who weep
Feel with those who feel
Hold back good judgment
My own sin repugnant

Body’s broken
Went astray
Amazing grace
Gethsemane

When I’m weak I’m strong
When I’m right I’m wrong
Sufficient dependent
God’s grace transcendent

Weep with those who weep
Feel with those who feel
Hold back good judgment
My own sin repugnant
