The Puzzlement of Ancient Spirituality

Comparing ancient living design to modern society is a study in contrast. Archeological discoveries reveal ancient cultures imposed greater communal value on spirituality.  This evidence is compelling and may provide a window of opportunity for contemporary recurrence toward social harmony prevalent during early eras of human development.

Last Breakfast

In Sunday School today I got saved, I
passed out, anyway, and Miss Hooker raised
me up again, not that I was dead for
real but I wasn't on my feet, either,
until she revived me--when I came to
she was slapping my cheeks, I mean on my
face, and they felt as red as her hair, her

Walking To Sauk Rapids

Walking to Sauk Rapids is not as easy as it sounds.
Yes, there’s a bridge, sweetly gray and newly built,
but finding it in this endless mist takes patience
and a strong pair of eyes.  Sonar helps – bats careen

Swan

Preening,
Soft, virgin white feathers,
Aware of my presence
But not of my world.

Before me, another world,
No analytic philosophy,
No targets, budgets or schedules.
No self-appraisal,
Or attempt to be
Something other than
Just part of.

Face Paint

I
Getting the face right depends a lot on the colors,
black may make for cruelty or laughter,
white can be happy or hateful or dead,
and red raises hopes or burns them in the fire.

Battery

I was nine when my grandmother died. She was more than my father’s mother, she was my life raft. I wondered if I could make it without her. I wondered, not in words, but in my body.

My mother put on a dress that accentuated her plush 1950’s figure, and my father put on a dark business suit to wear to the funeral. They were leaving me home. My father was below average height, but towered above me as he bent to kiss me goodbye. His lips came out of a cloud of Old Spice. They left. I watched the car pull away through the ground-level den window, the same window through which my pal Richie and I sneaked frightened peaks when we watched monster movies. It was a grey and windy day, ordered for the occasion.

 Mimmi and Me in Paradise
I’d met Mimmi in Lyon. She was way so attractive, and for a while, I’m sure she found me engaging. That is not beyond understanding. I can be most persuasive at times. Well certainly until you get to know me. Mimmi was a citizen of that city.  She could speak French and English and had a part time job as a waitress. Which was fine, it gave me a lot of time to myself. We were nurturing a little romance and felt it needed to be tempered with a holiday in paradise.

STRIKE NOT

Las esperanzas engordan pero no maintienen.  Hope fattens, but it doesn't keep you alive.
It turned noon as David Alvarez raised the roof of the Crusher.  With short little explosive sounds, the Rambler lying in the Crusher’s bed released tension from its new shape, as if it tried to pop its bones back into its joints.  The compressor topped up its pressure, and when the gauge showed right for a fast restart, David turned off the diesel.
